Biological Activity

Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial and immunomodulatory agent that inhibits autophagy and impairs lysosomal function. By interfering with antigen presentation and Toll-like receptor signaling, it suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-6 from peripheral blood mononuclear cells, while upregulating IL-10. Additionally, hydroxychloroquine demonstrates antithrombotic and antiplatelet activity, reduces endothelin-1 secretion, and restores angiogenesis in TNF-α-treated endothelial cells. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
