Biological Activity
Hoechst 34580 is a cell-permeable blue fluorescent bis-benzimidazole dye that binds to DNA and acts as an inhibitor of amyloid-beta (Aβ) formation with an IC50 of 0.86 μM. By binding to the minor groove of double-stranded DNA, it enables visualization of nuclear morphology and chromatin condensation during cell cycle and apoptosis assays. Furthermore, its targeted modulation of Aβ processing attenuates toxic protein aggregation and downregulates downstream neurotoxic signaling pathways, highlighting its potential utility in Alzheimer's disease research.

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
