Biological Activity

Guanidine thiocyanate is a chaotropic agent and potent protein denaturant that acts as a strong inhibitor of ribonucleases and other nucleases. By disrupting hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding within proteins, it inactivates RNase enzymes to prevent enzymatic degradation of RNA during extraction procedures. This protein-denaturing activity also deactivates high-titer viruses in biological samples, ensuring the stability, purity, and integrity of isolated nucleic acids. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
