G-418 (Geneticin) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that targets the ribosomal subunit to inhibit protein synthesis in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. By binding to eukaryotic ribosomes, G-418 blocks polypeptide translational elongation and interferes with functional protein production. This inhibition of protein translation disrupts downstream protein synthesis pathways, ultimately impairing cellular growth and decreasing cell viability. [1]
