Biological Activity

Fumonisin B1 is a mycotoxin and potent inhibitor of sphingosine N-acyltransferase (ceramide synthase, IC50 = 0.1 µM in rat liver microsomes). By blocking ceramide synthase, it disrupts the de novo synthesis of sphingolipids and reduces the conversion of sphingosine to ceramide in intact hepatocytes, leading to altered cellular sphingolipid metabolism and compromised downstream cell survival pathways.
