Fludrocortisone is a synthetic corticosteroid that functions as a potent mineralocorticoid receptor agonist. Upon binding and activating the mineralocorticoid receptor, it regulates downstream gene expression involved in electrolyte transport and fluid balance. This activation enhances sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion, while increasing vascular pressor sensitivity to circulating catecholamines and angiotensin, thereby modulating central adrenergic signaling and systemic intravascular volume.
