Biological Activity

Filipin III is a polyene macrolide antibiotic and antifungal agent that targets membrane sterols. It exhibits antifungal activity against Candida utilis with an MIC of 0.3 mg/L and Saccharomyces cerevisiae with an MIC of 0.4 mg/L. By binding selectively to cholesterol and ergosterol, Filipin III disrupts membrane organization and alters membrane permeability. Its strong cholesterol affinity and intrinsic fluorescence also enable the cellular visualization and quantification of membrane cholesterol. [1]
