Biological Activity

Filipin complex is a polyene macrolide antibiotic and fluorescent probe that targets membrane cholesterol by sequestering unesterified sterols into distinct complexes. By disrupting cholesterol-rich membrane microdomains, it inhibits viral infection pathways, notably reducing porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus replication. Additionally, filipin complex impairs lysosomal cholesterol trafficking, serving as a histochemical tool to visualize unesterified cholesterol accumulation in cellular models of Niemann-Pick disease type C and related neurodegenerative disorders.
