Ferric citrate is an iron-supplying agent and a Class 1 ferroptosis inducer. As an exogenous iron source, it increases intracellular iron pools and enhances Fenton reactions, leading to elevated reactive oxygen species accumulation. This influx of redox-active iron drives extensive lipid peroxidation within cellular membranes and activates iron-dependent downstream pathways, ultimately triggering ferroptotic cell death. [1]
