Ethyl methanesulfonate is an alkylating agent and DNA ethylating agent that functions primarily as a mutagen. It ethylates guanine bases to induce base mispairing, specifically producing guanine-cytosine to adenine-thymine (G/C to A/T) transition mutations. This DNA damage triggers intracellular DNA repair pathways and leads to the generation of point mutations, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and cellular mutagenesis in plant, animal, and mammalian systems.[1][2]
