EGTA-AM is a cell-permeable derivative of EGTA that acts as a potent intracellular calcium chelator. Upon crossing the plasma membrane, EGTA-AM is cleaved by endogenous intracellular esterases to yield free EGTA, which rapidly sequesters cytosolic calcium ions. By attenuating cytosolic Ca2+ surges, EGTA-AM suppresses calcium-dependent signaling pathways and inhibits downstream biological processes including neurotransmitter release, exocytosis, and calcium-induced cell death.
