Biological Activity
Eflornithine (DFMO) is an orally bioavailable, irreversible, and highly specific inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), the rate-limiting enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis. By blocking ODC activity, eflornithine depletes intracellular polyamine pools, suppressing polyamine-dependent cellular processes and cell proliferation. This inhibition disrupts tumor cell growth and displays significant antitumor activity against various malignancies, including glial tumors and neuroblastoma. [1]
