Biological Activity

EDC hydrochloride is a water-soluble zero-length carbodiimide crosslinking reagent that activates carboxyl groups to form reactive intermediates for condensation with primary amines or nucleic acid modification. By facilitating direct covalent amide bond formation without adding extra spacer atoms, EDC stabilizes noncovalent protein complexes and biomolecular conjugates. This zero-length crosslinking mechanism maintains molecular assemblies for structural analysis and functional characterization of macromolecular interactions.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
