Biological Activity

DMNQ is a 1,4-naphthoquinone redox-cycling agent that promotes intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species, specifically superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide. By continually engaging in single-electron reduction-oxidation cycles, DMNQ induces cellular oxidative stress without requiring enzymatic activation. This elevation in oxidative stress disrupts intracellular redox homeostasis, influencing downstream signal transduction pathways and regulating cell viability, differentiation, and apoptosis. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
