DL-Carnitine is a racemic mixture of L-carnitine and D-carnitine that regulates mitochondrial fatty acid transport and oxidation pathways. While L-carnitine facilitates the translocation of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix for beta-oxidation, the presence of D-carnitine in the racemic mixture impairs endogenous carnitine function. Consequently, DL-carnitine administration causes muscular toxicity, skeletal muscle weakness, and symptoms resembling myasthenia or cardiac arrhythmias. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
