Biological Activity

Dihydrolanosterol is an endogenous cholesterol biosynthesis intermediate that functions as a selective regulator of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. By inducing conformational changes in HMG-CoA reductase, it accelerates binding to insulin-induced gene (Insig) proteins for ubiquitin-mediated endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. This rapid turnover of HMG-CoA reductase suppresses rate-limiting enzymatic activity, thereby downregulating overall cellular cholesterol biosynthesis.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
