Digitonin is a steroidal saponin and glycoside derived from Digitalis purpurea that exhibits cell membrane lytic activity, displaying an ICofon sheep RBC membranes. It selectively complexes with membrane cholesterol, causing structural disintegration of lipid bilayers, transient membrane permeabilization, and cell lysis. Consequently, digitonin disrupts plasma membrane integrity to facilitate cellular permeabilization, release intracellular contents, and enhance cellular drug uptake. [1]
