Biological Activity

Diethyl pyrocarbonate is a non-specific inhibitor of ribonuclease (RNase) that acts as a chemical modifying agent relatively selective for the imidazole group of histidine residues. By covalently modifying histidine, serine, threonine, and tyrosine side chains, it disrupts enzymatic active sites and suppresses central CO2 chemosensitivity, resulting in structural conformational changes and inactivation of nucleases like RNase A.[1][2]
