Biological Activity
Demeclocycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that functions as a bacteriostatic inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis and an antagonist of vasopressin signaling in renal collecting duct cells. It suppresses vasopressin-stimulated cyclic AMP generation and downstream signal transduction in renal tubular cells, thereby reducing water reabsorption to induce diuresis. This cellular and physiological activity effectively normalizes plasma sodium levels to reverse water retention associated with inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. [1]
