Biological Activity

D-(-)-Tartaric acid is an unnatural enantiomer of tartaric acid that functions as a versatile chiral building block and biochemical tool. Unlike its natural L-(+)-isomer, D-(-)-tartaric acid participates in stereospecific metabolic pathways, serving as a selective substrate or metabolite for specific microbial enzymes such as D-tartrate dehydratase. It is widely utilized in organic synthesis as a chiral resolving agent to prepare enantiomerically pure intermediates and downstream functional molecules. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
