Biological Activity

D-(−)-Pantolactone is a degradation product and chiral biosynthetic precursor of pantothenic acid, an essential water-soluble vitamin required for coenzyme A biosynthesis. It acts as a key substrate for specific lactonases, such as pantolactonase, undergoing enantioselective enzymatic hydrolysis to form D-pantoic acid. Through its role in pantothenate metabolism, it supports cellular energy production, fatty acid synthesis, and central metabolic pathways essential for cell viability. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
