Biological Activity

D-AP5 (D-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid) is a selective and competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that targets the glutamate binding site of NMDA receptors. By selectively blocking NMDA receptor-mediated ion channel activation, D-AP5 disrupts glutamatergic excitatory synaptic transmission. Consequently, inhibition of this signaling pathway blocks hippocampal synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation (LTP), impairing spatial learning and memory formation in animal models. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
