Biological Activity

Cyproheptadine HCl is a first-generation histamine receptor antagonist that selectively blocks histamine H1 receptors and serotonin 5-HT receptors. By competing with endogenous histamine and serotonin for receptor binding sites, it inhibits downstream signaling pathways involved in allergic responses, smooth muscle contraction, and vasodilation. Cyproheptadine also exhibits anticholinergic properties, suppressing muscarinic receptor-mediated signaling to modulate cellular phenotypes and neurochemical activity. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
