Biological Activity

CY5 (Sulfo-Cyanine5) is a far-red cyanine fluorescent dye widely used for labeling nucleic acids, proteins, and other biomolecules. Functioning as an acceptor fluorophore in Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) assays, CY5 enables single-molecule tracking of structural conformational dynamics, RNA folding pathways, and intermolecular interactions. Structural analysis demonstrates that terminally attached CY5 stacks onto double-stranded DNA duplexes to facilitate accurate distance determinations in single-molecule FRET applications.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
