Climbazole is an imidazole antifungal agent that targets fungal cytochrome P450 14α-demethylase (CYP51) in the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. Blockade of CYP51 leads to the depletion of ergosterol and the accumulation of toxic methylated sterol intermediates, disrupting fungal cell membrane integrity and permeability. This inhibition impairs cell membrane function and suppresses fungal growth and proliferation, demonstrating broad-spectrum antifungal activity.
