Biological Activity

Chloramphenicol sodium succinate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and prodrug form of chloramphenicol that exhibits antibacterial activity by targeting bacterial ribosomes. Upon conversion to its active form, it binds reversibly to the 50S ribosomal subunit at the peptidyl transferase center. This inhibition blocks peptide bond formation during protein translation, disrupting bacterial protein synthesis and ultimately inhibiting bacterial growth across a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
