Biological Activity

Butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant and an inhibitor of ferroptosis. It functions primarily as a lipophilic radical scavenger that suppresses lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species accumulation within lipid bilayers. By halting radical chain propagation during cellular lipid oxidation, BHA protects cells from oxidative membrane damage and effectively prevents iron-dependent ferroptotic cell death.[1][2]
