Biological Activity

Bismuth subnitrate is an antigastric ulcer and antidiarrheic agent that acts as a potent inducer of metallothionein (MT). By inducing MT expression selectively in renal and intestinal tissues, bismuth subnitrate enhances cellular heavy-metal sequestration and antioxidant defenses. This selective induction mitigates toxic damage induced by chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin while preserving antitumor activity, highlighting its role as a protective adjunct in cancer therapy.
