Betaxolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist. By competitively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, betaxolol inhibits catecholamine-mediated activation of adenylate cyclase, resulting in reduced intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation. Downstream, this suppression of cAMP/PKA signaling diminishes cardiac responsiveness and decreases aqueous humor production in ocular tissues, leading to reduced intraocular pressure and modulation of vascular tone.
