Biological Activity

Bephenium hydroxynaphthoate is an anthelmintic agent and selective activator of nematode B-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChR), including the Hco-L-AChR1 subtype composed of Hco-UNC-29.1, Hco-UNC-38, Hco-UNC-63, and Hco-ACR-8 subunits. Activation of these receptor complexes induces cation channel opening and membrane depolarization in parasite neuromuscular junctions. This continuous excitation disrupts cholinergic signaling pathways, leading to spastic paralysis and detachment of parasitic nematodes.

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
