Biological Activity

Benzo-15-crown-5-ether is a macrocyclic polyether and synthetic ionophore that functions as a chelating ligand for alkali metal cations, particularly sodium and potassium ions. By selectively binding these metal cations through oxygen atom coordination, it modulates ion transport across lipid membranes and influences cellular ion homeostasis. These chelating properties enable its utility in phase-transfer processes and chemical biology applications. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
