Biological Activity

Basic Orange 14 (Acridine Orange hemi (zinc chloride) salt) is an RNA polymerase inhibitor and cell-permeable metachromatic fluorescent dye that binds and stains DNA and RNA. Upon intercalating into nucleic acids, it exhibits differential fluorescence, emitting green light when bound to double-stranded DNA and red light when bound to single-stranded RNA or DNA. This interaction inhibits RNA polymerase-mediated nucleic acid synthesis, impairing transcription and altering cellular chromatin dynamics. [1]
