Biological Activity

Balsalazide disodium is an oral aminosalicylate prodrug that undergoes enzymatic cleavage in the colon to yield the active anti-inflammatory agent mesalazine. It suppresses colitis-associated carcinogenesis and intestinal inflammation through modulation of the IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway. By attenuating STAT3 activation and inflammatory signaling, balsalazide disodium reduces cytokine expression, mitigates mucosal tissue damage, and inhibits inflammation-driven tumor progression in gastrointestinal models.

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
