Biological Activity

Bacitracin zinc is an antibiotic agent that targets lipid pyrophosphates, specifically interfering with the dephosphorylation of C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, a key lipid carrier required for bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis. By forming a complex with isoprenyl pyrophosphates in the presence of divalent metal ions, it disrupts lipid carrier recycling and prevents extracellular transport of peptidoglycan building blocks, ultimately leading to bacterial cell wall degradation and growth inhibition.
