Biological Activity
Asymmetric dimethylarginine is an endogenous methylarginine and competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). By suppressing NOS activity and decreasing endothelial nitric oxide production, it disrupts NO-mediated signaling, impairs vascular relaxation, and promotes endothelial dysfunction. These cellular downstream effects lead to altered vascular tone and increased oxidative stress in vascular cell models. [1]
