Biological Activity

Aristolochic acid A is a plant-derived carcinogenic, mutagenic, and nephrotoxic agent that targets intracellular signaling pathways and causes genomic instability. It suppresses activator protein 1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activities, downregulating downstream transcriptional programs involved in inflammatory responses and cell survival. Furthermore, aristolochic acid A induces characteristic A:T to T:A gene mutations and DNA damage, leading to cellular toxicity and carcinogenesis. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
