Biological Activity

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic that targets penicillin-binding proteins to inhibit bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis. By acylating transpeptidases, ampicillin prevents cell wall cross-linking, which disrupts cell wall integrity and leads to osmotic lysis and bacterial death. It displays potent antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
