Aminoxyacetic acid is an inhibitor of the malate–aspartate shuttle (MAS), aminobutyrate aminotransferase, and cystathionine β-synthase. By suppressing cellular MAS activity, it impairs microglial energy metabolism, leading to mitochondrial depolarization, reduced intracellular ATP levels, and elevated cytosolic calcium concentrations. Consequently, this metabolic disruption induces both early- and late-stage apoptosis in resting and lipopolysaccharide-activated microglia. [1]
