Biological Activity
α-MSH (α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) is an endogenous neuropeptide and agonist of melanocortin receptors, including the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R). Binding to melanocortin receptors modulates intracellular cAMP signaling pathways, leading to the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and downstream inflammatory responses. Through these signaling mechanisms, α-MSH demonstrates anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antimicrobial activities, including staphylocidal activity against bacterial pathogens. [1][2]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
