Sorbitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol and polyol intermediate generated from glucose via aldose reductase in the polyol pathway. As a hyperosmotic agent, sorbitol exerts osmotic pressure to retain water in the intestinal lumen and promote gastrointestinal motility. Under hyperglycemic conditions, intracellular accumulation of sorbitol induces osmotic stress and cellular damage in ocular and neural tissues, contributing to diabetic complications including retinopathy, cataracts, and neuropathy.

- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
Pre-aliquoted for Longevity: Solid-state aliquots offer significantly longer shelf life compared to stock solutions, ensuring maximum stability for every use.
