Roxithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic that targets the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. By binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, it inhibits peptide translocation and disrupts bacterial protein synthesis, thereby suppressing bacterial growth. Roxithromycin displays a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity profile similar to erythromycin, showing enhanced potency against specific gram-negative organisms, particularly Legionella pneumophila.
