Nalidixic acid is a synthetic 1,8-naphthyridine antimicrobial agent that acts as an inhibitor of the A subunit of bacterial DNA gyrase. By targeting bacterial DNA gyrase, it inhibits bacterial DNA replication and blocks nucleic acid synthesis, ultimately suppressing protein synthesis and cellular growth. This inhibition disrupts DNA supercoiling and topological relaxation essential for bacterial survival, resulting in potent bactericidal activity against susceptible bacteria. [1]
