Biological Activity

Moxifloxacin hydrochloride (BAY12-8039 HCl) is a synthetic, fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent that targets bacterial DNA gyrase (type II topoisomerase) and topoisomerase IV. By inhibiting these essential enzymes, moxifloxacin disrupts bacterial DNA replication and transcription, preventing chromosomal separation during cell division. This broad-spectrum antibacterial activity leads to DNA strand breakage, suppression of cell replication, and bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
