Flutamide is an oral nonsteroidal antiandrogen that targets the androgen receptor (AR). It functions as a competitive antagonist against testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), blocking AR signaling and inhibiting androgen-responsive gene expression. By preventing AR activation, flutamide suppresses downstream signaling cascades critical for prostate tumor cell proliferation and survival, making it a widely utilized agent in prostate cancer research.
