Biological Activity

Crystal violet is a triarylmethane dye that exhibits potent antibacterial, antifungal, and anthelmintic activities. It dissociates into positive ions that interact with cell wall components of microorganisms, disrupting cellular membranes and inhibiting protein synthesis. Beyond its traditional use as a histological stain and topical antiseptic, crystal violet generates reactive oxygen species, leading to oxidative stress and induction of apoptosis in susceptible cell types.
