Biological Activity
8-Hydroxyquinoline is a lipophilic chelating agent and antimicrobial compound with fungistatic, bacteriostatic, anthelmintic, and amebicidal properties. It functions by chelating essential divalent metal cations, such as iron and copper, thereby disrupting vital metalloenzyme activities and microbial cell membrane integrity. This metal sequestration leads to the inhibition of microbial growth and the suppression of cellular proliferation across various bacterial and fungal strains. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
