Biological Activity

7β-Hydroxycholesterol is a bioactive oxysterol derived from the oxidation of cholesterol. It induces endothelial cell apoptosis, oxidative stress, and IL-1β secretion, promoting organelle dysfunction and inflammatory signaling. Furthermore, 7β-hydroxycholesterol upregulates key cell adhesion molecules, including ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin, thereby enhancing leukocyte adhesion and contributing to the early development of vascular pathology and atherosclerosis.

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
