Biological Activity

7-Hydroxy-4-methyl-8-nitrocoumarin is a nitro-substituted derivative of 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (4-methylumbelliferone), belonging to the coumarin family of bioactive compounds. Coumarin derivatives, such as 4-methylumbelliferone, function as inhibitors of hyaluronan synthesis by downregulating hyaluronan synthase expression and depleting cellular UDP-glucuronic acid pools. Suppression of hyaluronan production alters the extracellular matrix microenvironment, leading to attenuated cell proliferation, reduced cell migration, and inhibition of tumor growth in various preclinical models.

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
