Biological Activity
7-Dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC, Provitamin D3) is an endogenous zoosterol derivative that functions as an immediate precursor in free cholesterol biosynthesis and a precursor for vitamin D3 production. Upon ultraviolet radiation exposure in skin, 7-dehydrocholesterol undergoes photoisomerization to previtamin D3, which subsequently converts to vitamin D3 to regulate calcium homeostasis, bone mineralization, and cellular differentiation pathways. In cellular lipids, 7-dehydrocholesterol also participates in redox processes and lipid peroxidation networks. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
