Biological Activity

7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that functions as an immunosuppressive agent and potent organ-specific procarcinogen metabolized by cytochrome Penzymes such as CYP1B Metabolic activation of DMBA generates reactive diol-epoxide intermediates that form DNA adducts, leading to genotoxicity, bone marrow suppression, and preleukemic cell formation. Additionally, CYP1B1-dependent bioactivation mediates spleen cell immunotoxicity and suppresses humoral immune responses. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
